What Affects the Cost of a Garden Renovation?

There isn't a useful single cost per square metre for renovating a garden.

Two gardens of a similar size can have very different budgets depending on the amount of work involved.

The main factors are usually the amount of groundworks and construction required, the choice of materials, access to the garden, changes in level and any additional features such as lighting, irrigation or structures.

From there we create a layout that gives each part of the garden a purpose while still allowing the whole space to feel connected.

Paving, paths, levels and structures provide the framework, but the planting is designed as part of the garden from the beginning. Trees, hedging and generous planted areas help create privacy, frame views, soften the harder elements and give the garden its character as it matures.

Not every garden needs a complete redesign.

Where the paving, walls and basic layout are already working well, planting can be what completely changes the space.

Where Is Your Budget Best Spent?

This will be different for every garden.

For some gardens, the priority may be correcting levels, drainage or an awkward layout.

For another, the greatest improvement might come from privacy planting, mature trees and generous beds.

We also look carefully at how the garden is seen from inside the house. With larger areas of glass now common in kitchens and living spaces, the garden is often on view throughout the year, not just when you're outside using it.

That makes planting, screening and the positioning of key features particularly important.

Does Garden Size Determine the Cost?

Garden size is part of the picture, but it doesn't determine the cost on its own.

A smaller garden with difficult access, significant construction or bespoke details can involve more work than a much larger garden where the existing layout is largely retained.

Likewise, a large garden doesn't always need to be completely redesigned from boundary to boundary.

For that reason, we look at the garden itself and the amount of work involved rather than pricing projects simply as small, medium or large.

For a Design, Build & Planting project, the next stage is the garden design. Once the layout and design have been developed, we prepare a quotation for the build and planting.

How Long Does a Garden Renovation Take?

This depends on the scale of the work.

A planting project can often be completed relatively quickly, whereas a complete garden redesign involving excavation, paving, walls and other construction naturally takes longer.

Access, weather, materials and the complexity of the garden can all influence the programme.
